European Journalism Conferences

European Journalism Conferences

For the first time, the European Journalism Conferences will take place in Strasbourg, from 4 to 6 November, following two previous editions held in Brussels.

This third edition, under the theme “Journalism: Europe’s Democratic Shield. European Journalism Facing the Challenge of the New Empires”, will explore the role of the media in addressing disinformation, economic pressures and the challenges of maintaining editorial independence.

Over three days, media professionals, researchers, students and members of the public will come together for debates, workshops and meetings at several venues across Strasbourg, including the City Hall, Münsterhof, the National Institute of Public Service (INSP), the European Parliament and the Cosmos cinema.

Some events will be open to the general public, giving everyone the opportunity to take part in discussions on the challenges facing journalism and democracy.

Highlights of the programme include:

  • Opening evening: Wednesday, 4 November, at 7 pm at Strasbourg City Hall. The discussion will focus on the question: “In the face of the new empires, can journalism be Europe’s democratic shield?”
  • Debate evening at INSP: A discussion exploring the question: “Climate disruption: What are journalists doing about it?”
  • Closing evening at the Cosmos cinema: A debate addressing a particularly sensitive issue: “Reporting in Ukraine. Reporting in Russia.”
  • Media and information literacy will also play an important role in this year's edition of the Conferences. The Journalism & Citizenship Association will organise a dedicated programme for schoolchildren.

Nearly 1,000 pupils are expected on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 November to take part in workshops focusing on disinformation, image analysis and discovering careers in journalism.

Finally, the press cartoon exhibition “Let’s Defend Democracy!”, presented by Cartooning for Peace, is also supported by the Journalism & Citizenship Association and the City of Strasbourg. It is being organised alongside the World Forum for Democracy (2–3 November at the Council of Europe) and the European Journalism Conferences in Strasbourg.

Twelve press cartoons will be displayed from 5 November on the railings surrounding Villa Schutzenberger, at 76 allée de la Robertsau.

Admission is free.

Registration is required for workshops and debates.
